Held.
For families of someone with schizophrenia, bipolar, or psychosis
You shouldn’t have to figure this out alone.
A support app for families of someone with schizophrenia, bipolar, or psychosis. Launching soon.
Every day, a parent, sibling, or spouse gets a call that changes their life forever.
The diagnosis is schizophrenia. Bipolar disorder. A psychotic break with no roadmap.
They go home and open Google. They fall down a rabbit hole of medical jargon, forum horror stories, and outdated pamphlets.
Nobody sits them down and says: here’s what’s happening, here’s what’s coming, and here’s how to survive this.
Held solves this problem.
Someone to hold you through the hardest moments.
What’s Coming
- 01
An AI companion, at 2am. It already knows the diagnosis, your relationship, and what you’ve already tried. You never start from the beginning again.
- 02
Plain answers, in plain words. What a psychiatric hold actually involves. Why he doesn’t think he’s sick, and why that’s a symptom rather than denial.
- 03
A grief workbook. For the loss nobody gave you a word for, because he’s still alive and there’s no ceremony for this.
- 04
A room of people who get it. Only for those on your side of the diagnosis. No backstory, no explaining, no performing.
One honest thing first
If you’re not already with NAMI, go there first.
We mean that. NAMI Family-to-Family is eight weeks, it’s free, it’s run by people who’ve lived it, and it’s the best starting point in the country. Go.
Held isn’t a replacement for it. Held is for Thursday at 2am, when the group doesn’t meet again until the 14th and the helpline closed four hours ago.
Different jobs. Take both.

Before you decide
The things you’re already thinking.
- “I’m not going to be told to leave him.”
- You won’t be. Held has no opinion about whether you stay. Plenty of people in your life already have one, which is part of why this is so lonely. If you’re staying, this helps you stay without losing yourself in it.
- “Is this therapy?”
- No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. It’s not treatment, it’s not a crisis service, and it doesn’t replace your care team. It’s closer to a knowledgeable friend who’s up late and already knows the backstory.
- “Is this just a chatbot?”
- It’s AI, and we’re not going to be cute about that. It’s good at one specific job: remembering your situation and helping you think through what to say. It is not a substitute for people who love you, and we’re not going to tell you it is. The community side is human.
- “Why should I trust another mental health app?”
- Fair. A lot of them charge you monthly for something that doesn’t help. That’s the reason the first 500 are free permanently, and the reason we’re asking what to build instead of telling you what we’ve already built.
- “What does it cost after that?”
- Founding members: nothing, ever. After that there’ll be a free tier that stays genuinely useful, and paid pieces for people who want to go deeper. The 2am conversation isn’t going behind a paywall.
- “Does it work for bipolar? For a sibling? For my husband?”
- Yes. We’re starting with families of people with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar, and psychosis. Parent, sibling, adult child, spouse.
